Myanmar canoe and kayak team departs for Thailand to compete in 33rd SEA Games

MYANMAR’S canoe and kayak athletes will represent the country at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, which will be held in Thailand from 9 to 20 December 2025. The team’s managers, coaches and athletes departed for Thailand by air yesterday.

“Our athletes are highly motivated to achieve good results. By travelling ahead of schedule, we will be able to begin training in Thailand from 3 December, which will help us become familiar with the competition environment. Since we will be competing in canoe and kayak events, the boats we will use have already arrived in Thailand in advance by container,” said U Thet Lwin Win, canoe/ kayak coach of the Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation.

Myanmar’s contingent includes three coaches and 17 athletes. The team will compete from 10 to 12 December in events according to category: four races in the 500-metre events on 10 December; three races in the 200-metre events on 11 December; and three 200-metre races on 12 December, according to the federation.

“Our team continued intensive training after the Cambodia SEA Games. During these training camps, we selected not only former elite athletes but also new talent from state and regional competitions. We will compete with full effort, especially against our main rivals — the host nation, Indonesia and Vietnam. Athletes from Myanmar, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and other countries will also take part,” coach U Thet Lwin Win explained.

The Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation has already earned numerous medals for the country and aims to secure many more at the upcoming 33rd Southeast Asian Games.

“Out of the 10 events, the men’s canoe category includes five races: men’s single 500m, men’s double 200m, men’s four-man 200 metres, women’s double 200 metres, and women’s double 500 metres. The kayak category includes two races: men’s double 200 metres and men’s four-man 200 metres. Mixed events include five races: mixed double 200 metres, mixed double 500m, and mixed four-man 500 metres, making a total of ten events in which Myanmar will compete. Sporting competitions are a symbol of national pride, patriotism and unity. Since our team has consistently won medals in the past, I believe we will once again return with medals and honour for our country at the 33rd Games,” U Thet Lwin Win said. — Thitsa (MNA)/MKKS
