Yangon’s LNG-fuelled power plants begin test runs with supply from Thilawa Port
ACCORDING to the Ministry of Electric
power, the power plants in Thanlyin and Thakayta townships of Yangon Region
have begun test operations using liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplied from an
LNG vessel docked at Thilawa Port in Thanlyin Township.
The Floating Storage Unit (FSU) for
liquefied natural gas at Thilawa Port in Thanlyin Township sends LNG via
pipeline to a regasification plant, which then supplies gas to the 200-megawatt
power plant in Thanlyin Township and the 400-megawatt power plant in Thakayta
Township, both of which are now undergoing test operations.
The vessel CNTIC V Power Energy, which
delivered the LNG to be distributed to LNG-fired power plants, berthed at
Thilawa Port in Thanlyin Township on 15 November. This LNG carrier, owned by
Hong Kong–based VPower Group, had previously berthed at a temporary jetty at
Thilawa Port in June 2020 to enable the generation of electricity using LNG,
and at that time was connected to the 400-megawatt power plant in Thakayta
Township and the 350-megawatt power plant in Thanlyin Township to carry out
electricity distribution. — ASH/KNN
