France, Italy report record daily COVID-19 cases
December 27
France and Italy logged the highest number of new coronavirus cases on Saturday.
French health authorities say they confirmed 104,611 new cases on Saturday. The daily tally hit a record high for the third consecutive day and topped the 100,000 mark for the first time.
Italy reported 54,762 new cases, also renewing the country's record for three days in a row.
The surges are believed to be boosted by the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.
Italian authorities imposed a nationwide outdoor face mask mandate from Friday. Large events, such as concerts, have been cancelled.
