US to end national COVID-19 emergency on May 11

The administration of US President Joe Biden said on Monday that it plans to lift the national COVID-19 emergency declaration on May 11.

The declaration, which has been in place since March 2020, enables the use of federal funds to support state and other local efforts for testing and vaccinations.

Data released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recently shown declines in both COVID hospitalizations and deaths.

The number of hospitalizations averaged around 3,600 per day as of January 28, while the daily number of deaths stood at about 540 as of January 25.

US media say the lifting of the emergency could mark the end of free vaccinations and public funding for certain tests and treatments.
