SAC Member DPM MoD Union Minister attends Grand Opening Ceremony of Trademark Registration, World IP Day (2023)

Member Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister for Defence General Mya Tun Oo, in
his capacity as Chairman of the Central Committee for Intellectual Property
Rights, attended the Grand Opening Ceremony of Trademark Registration and World
Intellectual Property Day 2023 held in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
At the event, the Deputy Prime
Minister Union Minister for Defence said Myanmar is a member of the World Trade
Organization-WTO and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and it
needs to establish an international intellectual property rights system for the
country. The government enacted four major IP Laws in 2019 and the Trademark
Law came into effect on 1 April 2023. The trademark registration processes will
begin on 26 April 2023 and so that day is a historic and significant day for
the country.
The WIPO member countries
celebrate World IP Day respectively and the theme of this year is “Women and
IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity”.
As the country carries out the
trademark registration and protects the trademarks as per the law, it will benefit
investment and trading, fully protect the owner of brands and eligible people,
and curb the imitation of products and fake products in the market to ensure
the competitive market system and create a safe community for the public.
Then, the vice-chair of the
committee and Union minister for Commerce made a remark and the video message
of the director-general of WIPO was played.
Then, the Deputy Prime Minister
pressed the electric button to launch the trademark registration system.
After the ceremony, he also
observed the demonstration of trademark registration processes, documentary
photos for the development of the IP system, works of winners of poems,
posters, cartoons and articles competitions marking 2023 World IP Day and
regional development programmes of the Intellectual Property Department, four
major IP Laws and counterfeit-real goods.
The event also included a talk
show under the theme of 2023 World IP Day by one female director-general of the
IP Department and three female directors-general of the departments concerned
while the deputy director-general of the IP Department and business people
discussed the matters related to the trademark rights.
The business people can make
trademark registration starting 26 April at the IP Department Nay Pyi Taw
(head), Lower Myanmar (Yangon branch) and Upper Myanmar (Mandalay branch) in
