6.2-magnitude quake jolts Japan's Hokkaido

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 struck parts of Japan's northern prefecture of Hokkaido, the weather agency said on Sunday.


According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the temblor occurred at 6:55 p.m. local time at a depth of 140 km, measuring lower 5 on Japan's seismic intensity scale which peaks at 7.


The temblor's epicenter was located off Urakawa at a latitude of 42.5 degrees north and a longitude of 142.0 degrees east.


No tsunami warning has been issued.
