Enhance capacity of women with empowerment
Recognizing the immeasurable value of women, Myanmar has designated the 3rd of July as Myanmar Women’s Day, a day to honour the noble attributes of women. This annual celebration complements the observance of International Women’s Day on 8 March, a global event dedicated to women’s rights.
Women’s participation in political, economic, social, and national defence roles is prevalent in Myanmar, as it is in other countries. Their significant contributions are crucial in solving critical issues and overcoming difficult challenges across all sectors. In the early 20th century, in response to demands for women’s rights, the United Nations officially declared a day to honour women who constitute more than half of the world’s population. In Myanmar, this led to the establishment of the Myanmar National Committee on Women’s Affairs and the proclamation of July 3rd as Myanmar Women’s Day.
Throughout history, women have actively and independently protected and promoted the interests of their families, communities, nation, and people, standing alongside their male counterparts. They have played leading roles in national reforms aimed at improving society and have shouldered high-level responsibilities in the legislative, administrative, and judicial pillars of the state. It is essential to honour and recognize outstanding women in various fields, such as politics, economics, social affairs, skills and knowledge, arts, defence, and security.
According to the latest estimated population census in June 2023, Myanmar has a population of over 55.79 million, with more than 27.49 million males and more than 28.29 million females. Women make up 50.70 per cent of the total population, representing more than half. Therefore, harnessing the force and strength of women is vital to achieving the political, economic, and social objectives of the state, ensuring balanced development nationwide, and advancing human society.
Efforts should be made to enhance the security and capabilities of the new generation of Myanmar women. By inspiring them to take pride in and emulate the excellent performances of capable women throughout history, we can encourage the development of their literacy, intellect, knowledge, and personality. This will enable them to stand shoulder to shoulder with men, contributing to the overall progress and prosperity of the nation.
Myanmar Women’s Day serves as a reminder of the valuable role women play and emphasizes the need to empower them further. By enhancing the capacity of women, Myanmar can unlock their full potential and create a more inclusive and equitable society. It is a collective responsibility to ensure that women have equal opportunities, support, and recognition, enabling them to thrive in all spheres of life.
