Pilgrimage, tourism surge in Bagan on Thadingyut Full Moon Day
ON Thadingyut Full Moon Day, pagodas across Myanmar
bustled with activity as people gathered to perform good deeds. Bagan – rich in
ancient temples and cultural heritage – experienced a surge in tourism this
year, exceeding the number of visitors compared to the previous full moon day.
“On Thadingyut Full Moon Day, Bagan’s renowned
pagodas were filled with pilgrims engaging in good deeds. Over 10,000 visitors
flocked to Htilominlo Pagoda and other sacred sites. The influx of visitors
brought joy to local shopkeepers and tour guides alike. On behalf of the
locals, I hope all visitors have a meaningful experience and encounter no
difficulties during their pilgrimage,” said Secretary U Tin Hla Oo from
Htilominlo Pagoda.
Buddhists offered meals, lights, and water at the
pagodas. Additionally, they paid respects to the elders and offered the Lord
Buddha with candlelight at night on this Abhidhamma Day.
Starting at 4 am, pilgrims offered food and water as
a mark of reverence at the famous pagodas of Bagan. As dusk fell, the pagodas
were illuminated by countless candles, dedicating to the Buddha and the monks.
Bagan received approximately 200,000 visitors this year, surpassing the 100,000
recorded in 2023. — Nyein Thu (MNA)/TRKM
