Media granted access to cover key election phases
UNION
Election Commission (UEC) Chairman U Ko Ko met Chairman Dr Tin Tun Oo of the
Myanmar Press Council and members at the commission office in Nay Pyi Taw
yesterday.
During
the meeting, the UEC chairman outlined the measures to ensure a free and fair
multiparty democratic election, including media access during the election,
coordination measures for the election handbook for media, election awareness
and media-related concerns.
He
also stated that the commission will collaborate closely with the media for
the upcoming election, adding that the public can contact the commission or the
State Administration Council’s Information Team for further information.
He
added that the media will be allowed to cover news systematically in three
sections of the election period, and the commission is willing to issue media
guidelines by negotiation with the Myanmar Press Council.
He
then mentioned the commission’s bad reputation from the 2020 general election
and pledged to hold a fair and lawful election.
The
chairperson and vice-chairpersons of the Myanmar Press Council discussed the
council’s role in press development and media access to elections.
The
two sides had friendly discussions on collaborating closely on press-related
