Moeyungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary seeks ASEAN Heritage Park status

THE Bago Region Government has revealed that efforts are un­derway to designate the Moe­yungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanc­tuary in Bago Township, Bago Region, as an ASEAN Heritage Park.

In support of this designa­tion, initiatives will be imple­mented to raise public aware­ness about the sustainable use of Moeyungyi Lake’s wetland re­sources and ecosystem services. Additionally, community-based conservation efforts will be en­hanced to ensure the long-term preservation of the natural eco­system.

The Moeyungyi Lake, which spans 25,600 acres, has become a seasonal refuge for various mi­gratory bird species this year. Among them are the lesser whis­tling duck, gadwall, cotton pygmy goose, tufted duck, black-headed ibis, ruddy shelduck, northern pintail, Asian openbill, black-winged stilt, river tern, and spot-billed pelican. Notably, rare bird species such as the glossy ibis have also been observed.

According to records, the Moeyungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary is home to 120 mam­mal species, 28 species of am­phibians and reptiles, 33 insect species, 77 resident bird species, 44 species of fish, and 74 species of aquatic plants during the win­ter season.

As an inland wetland area, the Moeyungyi Lake serves as a critical habitat for migratory birds and endangered bird spe­cies. It is also an important site along the East Asia-Australa­sia Flyway network, offering a well-preserved natural ecosys­tem with rich biodiversity.
