Performance competition on applying Thanaka culture held in Yangon
THE
Myanmar Cultural Heritage Trust announced that it organized a performance
competition titled the ‘National Brethren’s Thanaka Festival’ on the evening
of 12 February at Seinlan Soepyay Park in Kamayut Township, Yangon Region.
Chairperson
Daw Sanda Khin of the Myanmar Cultural Heritage Trust said that the festival
was held to promote the preservation of Myanmar’s traditional culture of
wearing Thanaka, a practice followed by all ethnic groups and age groups. The
event also aims at encouraging various social organizations nationwide to
submit the tradition of wearing Thanaka for inclusion in UNESCO’s Representative
List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
A
total of 36 teams participated in the Thanaka performance competition,
competing in different styles of applying Thanaka paste.
The
Department of Archaeology and National Museum under the Ministry of Religious
Affairs and Culture is working to resubmit the ‘Myanmar Thanaka Culture’ for
inclusion in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage
of Humanity before 31 March 2025. A survey has also been launched to collect
feedback on including Myanmar’s traditional Thanaka culture in UNESCO’s List of
Intangible Cultural Heritage. — ASH/TH
