Myanmar nationals linked to online gambling scams repatriated from Cambodia
24 JANUARY 2026
THE Myanmar government is taking
its national responsibility to combat online fraud and online gambling, both of
which pose a threat to the international community, seriously. It is actively
cooperating with neighbouring and regional countries, as well as international
organizations, to identify, arrest, and take effective and severe action
against those involved in online scam centre operations and the foreign
individuals behind them. In addition, foreigners who have entered Myanmar for
various reasons are being investigated in accordance with the law, with due
consideration for humanitarian concerns and friendly relations between
countries, and those found to be involved are being repatriated to their
respective countries. Furthermore, individuals who have committed serious
crimes are being arrested, detained, and officially transferred to the relevant
authorities of their home governments.
Similarly, the Cambodian
government is implementing measures to combat online fraud and online gambling
within its country. It is reported that 675 Myanmar nationals who were involved
in online fraud and gambling in Cambodia for various reasons arrived at the
Myanmar Embassy to Cambodia yesterday, either on their own initiative or after
being transferred by Cambodian police and relevant departments.
Of the first batch of 675 Myanmar
nationals who were at the Myanmar Embassy to Cambodia, 136 arrived back at Mandalay
International Airport in Myanmar early in the morning of 23 January on Myanmar
Airways International (MAI). Relevant officials will continue to collect the
necessary personal information and records of Myanmar citizens returning from
Cambodia, conduct the required checks, and complete the necessary procedures.
They will also continue efforts to repatriate the remaining Myanmar citizens in
Cambodia as soon as possible. — MNA/TH
