Myanmar, Thailand explore Tachilek-Mae Sai corridor to boost cross-border trade

MYANMAR-THAILAND discusses designating Tachilek-Mae Sai as transit corridor to increase transport connectivity, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.

Myanmar and Thailand are under discussion to utilize the Mae Sai-TachilekKengtung-Taphin-Mongla route as R3B section to facilitate the fruit export from Thailand to China through Myanmar in compliance with stipulated phytosanitary regulations.

Furthermore, the discussion highlighted ensuring smooth export of 16 main items from Myanmar to Thailand, including maize, black gram, sesame, green gram and rice, in line with International Standard for Phytosanitary Measure and setting temporary stops for Thailand’s fruit exports through Myanmar to China.

Utilizing this crossing will likely increase international cargo volume, enhance trade, services and logistic sector along the Thailand-Myanmar border, expand logistic businesses such as transport and warehouse management and create job opportunities for residents on both sides.

The meeting was held in Tachilek, eastern Shan State, with the presence of Myanmar delegations led by the deputy director-general of the MALI and the Thai delegation comprising advisers from the National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards under Thailand’s Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. — ASH/KK
