Crackdown on online scam and gambling operations in Shan State intensified

THE Myanmar Government is giving serious priority, as a matter of national responsibility, to combatting online scams and gambling activities that pose threats worldwide. In order to prevent such operations from taking root within Myanmar, the authorities are actively cooperating not only with domestic organizations but also with neighbouring governments through coordinated efforts.

Combined security teams have been carrying out area security operations, searches and inspections in relevant areas to ensure that individuals involved in online scam and gambling activities are not based there and that such activities are not being conducted. During operations conducted yesterday evening, security forces searched a house in Swansaw Word, Muse, Shan State (North), where they arrested 38 suspects involved in online scam and gambling activities — four Chinese nationals, 25 Myanmar men and nine Myanmar women — together with 155 assorted mobile phones, 30 all-in-one computers, Chinese Yuan 10,000, Myanmar currency K1 million and two Crown vehicles.

Security teams continued their security operations and later arrested an additional four Myanmar male suspects involved in online scam and gambling activities at a house from the same ward together with 95 mobile phones and two wifi routers.

After the necessary investigations are completed, those arrested for involvement in online scams and gambling activities will face effective and severe action in accordance with existing laws. The seized operational equipment will also be dealt with in line with established procedures.

The report added that the State will continue actively cooperating with neighbouring countries, regional nations and international organizations in efforts to eradicate online scam and gambling activities and prevent such operations from being established within Myanmar. — MNA/KZL
