Myanmar Freshwater Shrimp Successfully Hatched

Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Min Naung visited the Department of Fisheries’ freshwater shrimp hatchery in Kyauktan Township, yesterday morning, where he instructed officials regarding ongoing work.

Upon arrival at the Kyauktan freshwater shrimp hatchery, the deputy director explained the hatchery process and conducted a practical demonstration.

While inspecting the site, the Union minister said that since 1996, private entrepreneurs had carried out hatchery operations using technology provided by ministry’s experts.

However, operations were suspended in 2012 due to a disease outbreak. Later, Thai varieties were imported and bred. He added that from 2026-2027, breeding will resume using Myanmar freshwater shrimp, with shrimp fry to be distributed to entrepreneurs. From 2027 onward, entrepreneurs will begin breeding their own shrimp, producing domestic Myanmar shrimp and exporting any surplus.

In the afternoon, the Union minister visited private farms, namely the Ahman Dairy Cattle Farm and TM Dairy Cattle Farm in Laydauntkan, Mingaladon Township.

He said that since the farms were established more than 23 years ago, they should be systematically upgraded to modern breeding systems, operated under farm biosecurity measures, and given attention to food safety and quality standards in milk and dairy production.

He also discussed the systematic production and year-round use of nutritious grasses for animal feed, as well as mixing them with locally available agricultural products and green vegetable waste currently being used as feed.

The Ahman Dairy Farm has 340 cattle, including 118 lactating cows, producing about 650 viss of milk daily. TM Dairy Farm has 750 cattle, including 300 lactating cows, producing about 1,500 viss of milk daily
