Pyigyimandaing residents earn steady income from Tanyin fruit sales

PEOPLE living in Pyigyi­mandaing, Bokpyin District, Taninthayi Region, earn their livelihoods not only through perennial and seasonal orchard cultivation but also by collect­ing and selling seasonal forest products from the surrounding natural forests.

At present, residents are receiving good prices for Tanyin fruit, enabling them to earn a steady income.

Tanyin trees grow naturally in the forests around Pyigyiman­daing. The leaves of the tree are available throughout the year, while the flowers begin to bloom towards the end of the cool sea­son and later develop into fruit. As the fruits are now ripening, locals are harvesting and selling them. A condensed milk tin of Tanyin fruit is selling for up to K1,000, while one ‘Pyi’ fetches up to K8,000.

The locally known ‘Tanyin’ tree produces flowers, leaves and fruits, all of which can be prepared and eaten in various ways. Young fruits can be cooked as a curry, while ripe fruits are boiled and eaten as a snack. — Pyigyimandaing IPRD/MKKS
