YR to introduce underground telecom cable network across city

THE Yangon Region Government plans to transform overhead telecom lines across the region into underground cable networks, according to the regional government.

A coordination meeting on shifting the existing communication network from overhead lines to an underground cable system was held at the Yangon Region Government Office on 10 May. Relevant departments and telecom companies will jointly implement the project.

The project will initially be launched in the four Dagon Myothit townships before being expanded to surrounding townships such as South Okkalapa and North Okkalapa. Authorities also plan to continue the project in Yangon’s downtown area.

Officials said the underground cable system would help clear tangled communication lines installed on electric poles, improve the city’s landscape and reduce fire hazards.

Some of the current telecom cables installed across Yangon are reportedly of substandard quality, vulnerable to weather damage and at risk of causing fires due to overcrowded installations. — ASH/KZL
