418 Acres of Rain-Fed Peanuts Planted in Ngape Township

Ngape, July 3

Farmers in Ngape Township, Magway Region, have planted 418 acres of rain-fed peanuts toward this year's target of 679 acres, as part of efforts to increase local edible oil production.

According to the Township Agriculture Department, the planted area comprises 150 acres of Magway-16, 178 acres of Tonthani, and 90 acres of Vietnam varieties. Farmers are being encouraged to cultivate high-yielding varieties with germination rates above 80 percent while adopting proper input management, weed control, and pest management practices to help achieve the production target.

Township Agriculture Department Head U Myint Thein said 350 acres have been designated to meet the target yield.

Last year, 325 acres of rain-fed peanuts were cultivated in the township, producing an average yield of 70.15 bushels per acre. Expanding peanut cultivation is expected to strengthen local edible oil self-sufficiency and contribute to more stable commodity prices.—Ma Yu (Ngape)
