Yangon Region Completes Cultivation of Nearly 628,000 Acres of Monsoon Paddy

Yangon, July 9

Yangon Region has planted 627,996 acres of monsoon paddy against its 2026 target of 1,148,222 acres, according to the Yangon Region Department of Agriculture.

Deputy Director U Myo Myint said 14 high-yielding rice varieties are being cultivated in the region's export-oriented paddy-growing areas, with plans to further expand cultivation next year. Pawsan paddy, which is in demand overseas, has been extended from six townships last year to 10 townships this year. Farmers have also received training on modern farming techniques and the balanced use of chemical and organic fertilizers to improve productivity and grain quality.

The region is cultivating a range of high-yielding and quality rice varieties, including Sinthukha, Day-90, Aungnaingtoe, Yadanartoe, Pawsan, Ayeyarmin, GW-11 and Hmawbi-2, alongside locally adapted varieties.

Beginning this monsoon season, paddy cultivation will be expanded across nine districts, including export production zones, with emphasis on higher yields, improved soil fertility, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Integrated Pest Management (IPM), food safety and sustainable rice production through cooperation among farmers, millers and companies.

To support production, 5,640 bags of urea fertilizer produced by Myanmar Petrochemical Enterprise have been distributed to farmers, while a further 60,000 bags of urea and 30,000 bags of compound fertilizer will be supplied.— Thit Sar (MNA)
