M-League opens on 28 Aug with major changes, new look

THE 2026-2027 M-League season, organized by the Myanmar Football Federation and Myanmar League with Grand Royal, AYA Bank and AYA Pay as key sponsors, will kick off on 28 August. Defending champions Shan United will face Yangon City, who have made extensive pre-season preparations.

The opening fixtures will see Chinland face Yadanabon at YUSC Stadium and Thitsa Arman take on Myawady at Thanlyin Thihadipa Stadium on 28 August. On 29 August, Dagon Star United will meet Hanthawady United at Thanlyin Thihadipa Stadium, while Ayeyawady United will face the Sports and Physical Education Institute at Pathein Kyauktaing Stadium. On 30 August, Yangon City will host Shan United at Padetha Stadium in South Okkalapa, while Yangon United will face Sagaing United at YUSC Stadium.

The first round will run from 28 August to 21 December at venues in Yangon, Taunggyi, Pathein and Bago. Yadanabon will play its home matches at Bahtoo Stadium in Mandalay from the second round onwards.

The league enters the season with a new identity, including a new name and logo, increased club subsidies and higher prize money. The AYA Pay Player of the Match award, for example, will rise from K300,000 to K1 million.

First held in 2009, the M-League will enter its 17th season. Shan United have won seven titles, Yangon United five and Yadanabon four in the previous 16 seasons. With most clubs strengthening their squads during the pre-season, competition is expected to be stronger this season. — Ko Nyi Lay/KZL
