MNREC designates Thuwunnashan Protected Public Forest in Mongpyin

THE Ministry of Natu­ral Resources and En­vironmental Conserva­tion has designated the area of 61,008 acres in Mongpyin Township of Kengtung District of Shan State as “Thuwun­nashan Protected Public Forest” as of 1 Septem­ber 2026 by exercising the authority conferred under Sub-section (c) of Section (6) of the For­est Law promulgated in 2018.

 

The Ministry has designated the forest area as a protected pub­lic forest, aiming to gen­erate numerous benefits for local communities. By establishing conser­vation areas and provid­ing legal protection for forest areas, the Minis­try can further strength­en forest protection and conservation efforts, thereby improving local ecosystems, ensuring the long-term sustain­ability of water-source areas, mitigating the im­pacts of climate change, and providing significant support for local farmers and agricultural activ­ities.

 

The Thuwunnashan Protected Public Forest can help conserve for­est species such as teak, pine, pyinkado, chestnut, oak, Thitya (Laukya) and mountain tamarind. It will also help protect wildlife species, includ­ing monkeys, wild boars, deer, barking deer, hares, junglefowl, partridges and quails, alongside the forests and trees. The designation is also ex­pected to enhance the ecosystem, support the socioeconomic develop­ment of local communi­ties and create favoura­ble climatic conditions for farming, agriculture and orchard cultivation. In addition, village wa­ter sources and springs are expected to improve and remain sustainable in the long term, provid­ing a range of benefits to local communities. — MNREC/KTZH
