Yangon’s Historic Bogyoke Aung San Market to Celebrate Centenary in October
YANGON’S historic Bogyoke Aung San Market will mark its 100th anniversary with a five-day festival from 7 to 11 October, open daily from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, organizer Ma Chaw Su Htwe announced at a press briefing yesterday.
Aiming to showcase the landmark’s colonial-era architecture to younger generations, bridge different age groups, and connect local MSMEs, the festival has been in preparation for four months and is roughly 80 per cent complete.
Key highlights include a live five-day creation of a 20-by-10- foot painting, handicraft workshops, historical fashion shows spanning three eras, ethnic costume photo booths, design competitions, and a rare display of Myanmar’s vintage fortune-telling weighing scale. The festival will host 111 retail stalls offering traditional silk, cotton, tea, regional specialties, and religious items, along with 32 healthy food stalls. Organizers expect tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of daily visitors, with live entertainment planned for families, youth, and foreign tourists. — MT/ST
