Domestic pilgrims flock to Shwedagon Pagoda during public holidays

 



Between 30,000 and 50,000 devotees paid homage to the Shwedagon Pagoda during public holidays, according to the Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees.


Normally, there are nearly 20,000 visitors daily but there are between 30,000 and 50,000 at weekends and on public holidays.


In addition, a total of be­tween 30,000 and 50,000 pilgrims at weekends and during public holidays flock to the Shwedagon Pagoda.


Visitors to the Shwedagon Pagoda are increasing and include tourists from ASEAN countries, such as Thailand, Viet Nam and Cambodia, China, European countries and some Americans.


The Shwedagon Pagoda has been closed to visitors dur­ing the Covid-19 outbreak but now it is open from 5 am to 8 pm.


The Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees said that the number of domestic worship­pers and tourists are gradual­ly increasing starting from the reopening as the infection of Covid-19 has dwindled. — TWA/ MKKS
