PyinOoLwin strawberries fetch good prices in Mandalay market

Fresh strawberries from PyinOoLwin fetch good prices at the fruit market in Mandalay, growers said.

Strawberries are sold well due to the normal yield this year as well as a decrease in Covid-19 cases. The opening price is good this year (K10,000 per viss) although it was K8,000 per viss last year. Fruit depot owners from Yangon and Mandalay appraise the price and then they buy the whole lot,” said Ko Phoe Thar, a grower from Pinleinthapyay village of PyinOoLwin Township.

“This year, strawberries from China are also entering Myanmar. So, we are selling competitively but the price does not drop significantly. I guess that the price is unlikely to drop to the bottom even when they are in season in March. It may fetch K2,000 per viss, he added.

Strawberries can be plucked up to the end of April. An acre can produce 1,500 visses. However, the yield may vary depending on the weather condition. Strawberries generally prefer plenty of sunlight.

“The earliest yield usually gets a higher price and the price of strawberries plunged to K1,200 in March, and it climbed to K2,000-3,000 per viss in the post-Thingyan period (mid- April),” said Ko Phoe Thar. – Min Htet Aung (Mandalay Sub-Printing House)/MKKS
