Local authorities have destroyed 100 tons of expired food and beverages including soft drinks in Bagrami, a suburb of Afghanistan's capital Kabul, the National Food and Drug Administration said in a statement on Tuesday.

"About 100 tons of expired food and beverages including a variety of soft drinks had been collected from shops and drug stores over the past two months and set on fire on Monday," the statement said.

The destroyed food items included biscuits, jam, honey, tomato paste, dates and dried fruits, according to the statement.

In a similar crackdown, authorities in the southern Kandahar city destroyed 1,000 tons of expired foodstuff and medicine weeks ago.

The Afghan caretaker government has vowed to crack down on illegal sale and disposal of spoiled food items and medicine in the country.
