More than 20 dead as heavy rain batters central, eastern Europe
Heavy rain has caused extensive damage in parts of central and eastern Europe. Reports say that more than 20 people have been killed.
The downpours started last week. They were caused by a stationary low-pressure system. Floods occurred across the region. In some cases, rivers broke their banks and the water flowed into homes. Bridges have also collapsed.
Footage taken on Monday in the eastern Czech city of Ostrava, which is located near the Polish border, shows a residential area flooded with muddy water. It also shows people being rescued by helicopter.
Reuters news agency has reported that at least 21 people have been killed in Romania, Poland, Austria and the Czech Republic.
In the affected areas where the water has receded, workers are busy removing large amounts of mud and debris. The governments are taking measures to cope with the damage. People in many areas remain without electricity and water.
