Laypin plum market stays strong despite season’s end
THE trade of Laypin plums, whose season
is going to end soon, has been still strong.
These plums are called Laypin plums as
they are produced from Laypin village located along the road to Mann Shwesettaw
Pagoda in central Myanmar and the flavour is distinctly sweet. Laypin plums are
available only for three months of the year. It is a plum that is gaining
popularity in Yangon.
“Laypin plum is sweet and has thick
flesh but not seedless. Laypin plum is produced from Pwintbyu and Minbu. The
supply already went short in some areas. Its sale is better than other kinds of
plums. Its price is now pretty high in Yangon because the season is about to
end. Yangon is the biggest buyer among others nationwide,” said a farmer from
Pwintbyu Township.
Last December, freshly harvested Laypin
plums were traded as the best in Yangon.
Laypin plum is crunchy and the flavour
is distinctively sweet from the stage of young fruit and sweeter when it
ripens. Despite being sweet, it is hardly to be infected and can be harvested
from November to March. — Thit Taw/ZS
