Sandalwood sales surge in Ayadaw
SANDALWOOD retail trade has been on the
rise in Ayadaw Township.
In Ayadaw, wholesalers sell sandalwood
majorly to Mandalay, and the retail trade also mounted over the last six
months.
“Sandalwood is widely used. We can sell
worth from K300,000 to K400,000 a day. I am a retailer. In Ayadaw, sandalwood
is one of the best-selling products. The sandalwood trade was also fine over
the last six months. The major destination for wholesalers is the Mandalay
market. Sandalwood isn’t grown in Ayadaw as a particular product. However,
some traders hunt it and resell it in the retail market,” said a man who runs
Thanaka and sandalwood retail trading in Ayadaw Township.
Sandalwood trade was slightly slow last
December, and traders in Pauk Township said they predicted that it would be
good if it is allowed to export to China again, as the border trading gates are
reportedly going to reopen soon.
Sandalwood is used in sculpturing,
making beads, giving them as presents, and using them as herbal remedies. —
