Domestic tourism to rise this Thingyan, surpassing 2024 levels
DOMESTIC tourism is expected to increase
this year during Thingyan compared to last year, according to interviews with
local tour industry players.During Thingyan, one of Myanmar’s most sacred
festivals, domestic tourists will visit destinations such as Nay Pyi Taw,
Mandalay and Inlay Lake in Shan State.
“Domestic travellers are expected to
increase slightly compared to last year. I think they will go to Mandalay,
Taunggyi, Inlay Lake, Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw. Most of them are from Yangon,”
said a tour operator. The tourism sector is forecast to receive more travellers
this year than last year, with more connecting trips.
“It’s not a huge increase, but there are
more people who will go after arranging with travel companies than last year,”
he said.
The Myanmar traditional New Year
festival, Ata Thingyan, was inscribed on the Representative List of Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 5 December at UNESCO’s 19th World Conference
held in Asunción, Paraguay.—
