MoIP, India sign MoU for Myanmar’s digital ID pilot programme

A signing ceremony for the
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on pilot cooperation in Myanmar’s Digital
Identity Programme between the Ministry of Immigration and Population (MoIP)
and the Government of the Republic of India was held yesterday at the
Ministry’s meeting hall in Nay Pyi Taw.
Union Minister for Immigration
and Population U Myint Kyaing, Deputy Ministers U Htay Hlaing and Dr Myo Thant,
Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Abhay Thakur, senior officials, and
departmental staff attended the ceremony.
In his opening address, the Union
minister highlighted that the Government of India is extending essential IT
assistance to support the implementation of a foundational digital identification
(e-ID) system in Myanmar, which is a crucial component of the country’s
e-Government framework. He noted that the MoU reflects a significant milestone
in technical collaboration between the two nations to implement Myanmar’s pilot
Digital Identity Project.
He further expressed appreciation
for India’s continued support, including technical guidance, efficient
implementation strategies, human resource development, and policy-sharing that
will benefit Myanmar’s digital transformation.
Following that, Indian Ambassador
Mr Abhay Thakur reaffirmed the Government of India’s commitment to supporting
the implementation of Myanmar’s Digital Identity Pilot Project through close
cooperation and resource sharing.
Subsequently, Union Minister U
Myint Kyaing and Ambassador Mr Abhay Thakur signed the MoU and exchanged the
signed documents.
The MoU aims to facilitate mutual
collaboration in implementing Myanmar’s Digital Unique Identity Programme, a
foundational element of the e-Government initiative. The cooperation will
involve the sharing of India’s technological expertise, regulatory practices,
and operational experiences, alongside technical exchanges and knowledge
sharing between government officials and experts. The agreement also includes
pilot implementation support of Myanmar’s Digital ID Programme. — MNA/KZL
