Pwintbyu Township begins harvesting oilseed sunflower crop
Pwintbyu
15 September
In Pwintbyu Township, Magway Region,
local farmers have begun harvesting oilseed sunflower planted in monsoon
season. The harvest, commenced in the first week of September, is yielding 19.30 baskets per
acre, according to Pwintbyu Township Department of Agriculture. During this
monsoon season, a total of 1,120 acres of oilseed sunflower were successfully
cultivated. As of September 15, harvesting has been completed on 80 acres.
In the township, local farmers focus
on cultivation of oilseed sunflower during monsoon and winter seasons due to
low production cost and high income. This year, officials from the Township
Department of Agriculture provided guidance to the local farmers on achieving high-yield,
implementing pests and diseases prevention measures, getting high-quality seeds
and agricultural awareness.
If cultivation of oilseed sunflower
is enhanced to achieve high-yield, it will not only be enough for domestic oil consumption but also the
surplus crop will be marketed to get more income. Hence, efforts should
be made to expand the cultivation of oilseed sunflower, according to an
official from the Township Department.
