Tatmadaw engineer wins 2025 ASEAN Outstanding Engineer Award

Major Pyae Phyo Maung of the
Ministry of Defence of Myanmar won the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering
Achievement Award – Individual Category 2025 at the 43rd ASEAN Federation of
Engineering Organizations (AFEO) Conference and Engineering Conference, held
from 28 to 30 October at the SMX Convention Centre Clark in Mabalacat City, Pampanga,
the Philippines.
The conference was attended by
officials from the engineering councils and federations of the 10 ASEAN
countries, as well as representatives from the World Engineering Organization,
the Asia-Pacific Region Engineering Organization, and engineers from various
Asian and ASEAN countries. They participated in conferences and workshops on
engineering development and presented research papers.
The conference dinner was held on
30 October, during which the AFEO President presented the ASEAN Outstanding
Engineering Achievement Award (Individual Category), the ASEAN Best Engineering
Project Award, and the ASEAN Best Engineer Award to the respective winners.
Major Pyae Phyo Maung, the winner
of the ASEAN Best Engineer Award, has achieved international recognition by
winning awards at international research conferences and world-class
engineering competitions such as the Composite World Cup. He combined modern and
traditional technologies to erect the world’s largest seated Buddha image, the
Maravijaya Buddha Image, and carried out composite technology conservation and
restoration work on ancient temples, pagodas, and buildings damaged by the
Mandalay earthquake in Myanmar.
The Myanmar Federation of
Engineering Organizations submitted a proposal to award Major Pyae Phyo Maung
the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award (Individual Category) in
recognition of his exceptional achievements. The award was approved following
scrutiny at the AFEO Midterm Meeting held in Da Nang, Vietnam, and further
