Move forward to achieve success with comprehensive preparations

THE XXXIII SEA Games have now concluded. Athletes from the participating countries competed with determination and a strong spirit. Those athletes gave their utmost effort, both mentally and physically, as they competed to bring success and honour to their respective nations.

At the XXXIII SEA Games, Myanmar’s sports contingent bagged three gold, 21 silver and 49 bronze medals, totalling 73, standing at the 7th position among the SEA countries. Compared with the XXXII SEA Games, the number of medals obtained at the XXXIII SEA Games is lower. There are many reasons for this decline. It indicates that the level of training of our athletes still needs to improve when compared with that of their opponents. In addition, not only during the competition period but also in the off-season, the nutritional plans arranged for the athletes need to be reviewed to ensure they meet proper standards. Moreover, it is necessary to study how the management and techniques used for our athletes differ from those used by competing countries.

Nevertheless, throughout the competition period, Myanmar migrant workers continued to support the Myanmar sports teams with a strong patriotic spirit, without regard for their limited income. To watch and cheer for a single match, many supporters took time off from work, spent their own money, and endured exhaustion. The overwhelming support from Myanmar fans in Thailand and other countries, as well as the millions who cheered through various media platforms, set an impressive record of encouragement. Our gratitude goes to all those supporters.

The XXXIII SEA Games offered many lessons for Myanmar sports teams and athletes. We must study the strengths and advantages of the competing teams that are more advanced and successful than we are, and make the necessary improvements based on our own needs. Both individually and as teams, it is essential to identify weaknesses without hesitation and make the required adjustments. Only then will we be able to achieve the rightful successes at future SEA Games.

This is not the time to blame one another for results that were below expectations or for falling short of standards. Instead, we must prepare for upcoming competitions and focus on how we can demonstrate greater skills and capabilities. We must always remember that our efforts are not only for ourselves but also bring honour to our country and our people. Athletes must keep in mind that while they compete, more than 50 million Myanmar people are watching and waiting for the national flag of Myanmar to be raised at the top.
