Road accidents kill 320, injure over 16,500 in W. Afghanistan in past year

At least 320 commuters have been killed and more than 16,500 others injured in road accidents across western Afghanistan's Herat province over the past year, local media outlet TOLOnews reported on Monday.

In the past week alone, 11 individuals were killed and 430 others injured in traffic accidents, according to records at the provincial hospital, TOLOnews quoted the hospital's official as saying.

Separately, authorities in northern Badakhshan province reported that 136 passengers were killed and 175 others injured in 122 traffic accidents over the same one-year period.

Thousands of Afghans die in traffic accidents every year, with the majority attributed to reckless driving, overloaded vehicles, poor road conditions, inadequate traffic signage and dilapidated highways.
