Ministry of Home Affairs sets Thingyan Festival in motion

FOR the Myanmar people, Thingyan symbolizes transition — the end of the old year and the beginning of a new one. During this period of transition, the traditional Thingyan Water Festival, which symbolizes washing away impurities of the past year, has been celebrated in line with Myanmar’s cultural traditions and customs in a grand and lively manner up to the present day. The Thingyan Water Festival is one of the largest and most vibrant festivals among Myanmar’s twelve seasonal festivals, held nationwide with water pavilions and widely participated in by the public.

Families of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army, Navy and Air) inaugurated the water-throwing pavilion of the 1387 ME Traditional Myanmar Maha Thingyan Festival in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday evening in pursuit of the Myanmar traditions.

Defence Services Commander-in-Chief General Ye Win Oo and his wife Daw Nilar, Defence Services Deputy Commander-in-Chief and Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Kyaw Swa Lin and his wife, Union-level officials, senior Tatmadaw officers and their wives, Tatmadaw officers and other ranks, artistes, dance groups and invitees attended the ceremony.

On arrival at the ceremony, senior Tatmadaw officers and their families welcomed the Defence Services Commander-in-Chief and party.

Senior Tatmadaw officers of the Commander-in-Chief Office and the party cut the ceremonial ribbon to open the pavilion.

Belles from the choral dance troupes performed dances with the song ‘Hnitthit Mingala’ and sprayed the guests with Eugenia sprigs.

The guests were served the Maha Thingyan festival refreshments and entertained with the songs and choral dances by renowned artistes and choral dance troupes.

Similarly, senior military officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) enjoyed the water-throwing festivals at Seinpan, Makyiyeik and Nay Pyi Taw pavilions near the housing of Tatmadaw members in the compound of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army).

Choral dance troupes and vocalists will reportedly present dances at the pavilions from the Akyo Day to Atet Day of the Maha Thingyan festival. — MNA/KTZH
