Hluttaw Reps Urged to Fulfil Election Pledges to the Public

HLUTTAW representatives need to emphasize fulfilling the trust and expectations placed in them by the voters who elected them, said U Khin Yi, Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw, at a meeting with Pyithu Hluttaw representatives and region Hluttaw representatives at Bo Min Yaung Hall in the Magway Region Hluttaw building yesterday morning.

Speaking on the occasion, the Speaker said that as the primary responsibility of the Hluttaw is legislation, greater efforts must be made in its term to amend, supplement, and enact laws that will contribute to national development and benefit the public.

He stressed that the Hluttaw needs to assess the current situation and consider enacting new laws that can ensure the public is able to live safely and securely in their daily social and economic lives.

He underscored that the Hluttaw must review the previously repealed laws for the sake of national security, public peace and stability. Committees formed at the Hluttaw must contribute much to Hluttaw processes.

He continued that as Hluttaw is a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, cooperation with these organizations must be maintained, and Hluttaw representatives are required to carry out their responsibilities with broad perspectives and outlooks.

He noted that as the government is implementing the 100- day plans for development of the State, Hluttaw representatives need to cooperate with the government in sustainable development and local development in their respective sectors.

The Speaker underlined that to help the public gain greater awareness of and interest in the role of the Hluttaw, arrangements should be made so that people from all sectors of society, including both young and old citizens as well as organizations working for the national interest, can directly observe Hluttaw activities. It is also necessary to ensure that Hluttaw activities are accurately and promptly released through newspapers and media outlets.

He urged Hluttaw representatives to work together to ensure that the legislature becomes a trusted law-making body for the public by promptly implementing, within the Hluttaw, the commitments they made to voters in their respective constituencies during the election campaign.

The Hluttaw representatives reported on the difficulties in opening Hluttaw representative offices and the requirements of constituencies. The Magway Region Hluttaw Speaker and officials responded to the discussions, and the Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker coordinated the measures.

The Speaker held a meeting with the Region Hluttaw Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, the committee chair and the secretary. Region Hluttaw Speaker Dr Maung Maung Htay reported on the formation of the committees at the regional Hluttaw, their responsibilities and powers. The Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker gave instructions.
