Cambodia's famed Angkor attracts 359,471 int'l tourists in first 5 months of 2026

Cambodia's renowned Angkor Archaeological Park welcomed a total of 359,471 international visitors in the first five months of 2026, a year-on-year decline of 31.8 percent, said a press release on Monday.

The UNESCO-listed world heritage site made 17.2 million U.S. dollars in revenue from ticket sales during the January-May period this year, down 30 percent year-on-year, said the press release from the state-owned Angkor Enterprise.

Located in northwest Siem Reap province, the 401-square-km park, the kingdom's most popular tourist destination, is home to 91 ancient temples, which had been built from the ninth to the 13th centuries.

Thong Mengdavid, deputy director at the China-ASEAN Studies Center of the Cambodia University of Technology and Science, said the decrease was likely due to global and regional economic slowdowns, online scam issue, and border conflict with Thailand.

"This drop has been exacerbated by the Middle East conflict, which has driven a significant rise in fuel prices and disrupted some flights," he told Xinhua.၏
