Emphasize efforts to ensure green societies
EVERY country needs to strengthen coordination and accelerate collaborative implementation of the sector-specific actions outlined in Myanmar’s Climate Change Policy, Strategy and Master Plan, which are being carried out to address the challenges posed by climate change, enhance climate resilience, and promote low-carbon development.
Countries around the world, including Myanmar, face natural disasters every year, resulting in significant socioeconomic losses. According to the 2026 Climate Risk Index published by certain international climate monitoring organizations, Myanmar is among the ten countries most severely affected by climate change.
The primary causes of climate change are the expansion of the energy and industrial sectors, increased use of fossil fuels, deforestation and land-use change, population growth accompanied by the expansion of agricultural and livestock farming activities, the development of transport systems, and the accumulation of large amounts of waste. As a result of these factors, substantially greater quantities of greenhouse gases are being released into the atmosphere.
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is necessary to promote the use of renewable energy and improve energy efficiency. Reforestation and forest conservation, as well as the development of climate-smart agriculture and livestock farming practices, are also essential. In addition, efforts must be accelerated to strengthen waste management and to reduce and phase out the use of refrigerants with high global warming potential.
The average temperature in 2025 was approximately 1.43° Celsius higher than the average temperature recorded during the 1850-1900 period. These data indicate that global temperatures are continuing to rise each year. It is projected that, if this trend cannot be controlled, by the end of this century, global temperatures could increase by approximately 2.1° to 3.5° Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
Climate change is an environmental issue faced worldwide, and it can only be addressed through cooperation between the international community and regional countries. For this purpose, Myanmar has become a Party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its related protocols, including the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, and is actively participating in climate change mitigation efforts in collaboration with the international community.
Priority must be given to promoting the development of renewable energy, planting and conserving forests and trees, developing climate-resilient agricultural systems, building energy-efficient urban and industrial sectors, and increasing the production and use of zero-emission electric vehicles. As such, efforts must be made to ensure the development of green economic activities across various sectors that help reduce carbon emissions, mitigate climate change, and support environmental conservation.
