Over 4,000 Afghan refugees return home in single day

More than 4,000 Afghan refugees returned to their homeland, Afghanistan, on Sunday as the influx of returnees from the neighboring countries has gained momentum amid pressure on undocumented foreign nationals to vacate the host nations, reported the official Bakhtar News Agency on Monday.

"A total of 790 Afghan refugee families, which made up of 4,100 individuals, returned to Afghanistan yesterday," the official media outlet added.

Out of the figure, 772 families have been transported to their provinces after receiving necessary assistance at the crossing points and the remaining 18 families will also be shifted to their home provinces soon, Bakhtar further said.

The majority of the former refugees have returned from Pakistan.

Both neighboring Pakistan and Iran, which have hosted millions of Afghan refugees for decades, asked the undocumented foreign nationals to vacate the host nations.

Previously, Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesman for the Afghan government, reported the return of 76,181 Afghan refugees to the country over the past month, and the process of return has been continuing.

More than 8 million Afghan refugees, according to Afghan officials, have returned to their country since taking over power by the current Afghan government in August 2021.
