Thegon Township to Plant 6,297 Acres of Sesame in Rainy Season
Thegon,
July 2
To
help achieve local edible oil self-sufficiency and strengthen the oilseed
production sector, farmers in Thegon Township, Bago Region, will cultivate
6,297 acres of sesame during the current rainy season.
Local
farmers plan to grow 6,297 acres of sesame, an important oilseed crop, this
rainy season. The varieties to be cultivated include Sinyadana-3, Sinyadana-14,
and Magway black sesame. Rain-fed sesame cultivation began in June.
Successful
sesame cultivation requires careful land preparation and proper crop
management. Farmers use seed drills and row seeders for planting, while
intercropping and the systematic application of herbicides help improve crop
performance. The Township Agriculture Department is also providing technical
assistance to farmers, including guidance on good agricultural practices and
the balanced use of organic and chemical fertilizers during the crop's growth
and pod-setting stages to help increase yields.—Ko Kyaw (Thegon)
