Standpipes deployed to reinforce eroded Ngawun embankment

RIVERBANK erosion along the Ngawun River in Laymyethna Township caused a breach beneath the Ngawun embankment, resulting in its subsidence and river water overflowing into the area. To reinforce the damaged section, 10 steel standpipes were transported from Yangon by tugboat and barge, and they arrived at the jetty in Laymyethna yesterday.

Deputy Minister for Construction U Myo Myint inspected the standpipes and the ongoing reinforcement works. A 12-metre-long standpipe was being driven into the ground with a vibro-hammer to reinforce existing steel sheet piles against the river current, while sandbags were being placed inside the standpipe.

The deputy minister instructed officials to prioritize workplace safety, keep the necessary equipment ready, continue driving standpipes in line with the river current, and complete the works as quickly as possible. — MNA/MKKS
