Cleanup efforts conducted in Ayeyawady Region

THE cleanup activities are continuing in Laymyethna Township, Ayeyawady Region, after heavy rainfall and river erosion caused a section of the Ngawun River embankment to collapse on the night of 30 July. The breach led to flooding in five urban wards of Laymyethna, major roads in the town area and five urban wards of Hinthada, Yekyi, Kyonpyaw and Kyaunggon townships and surrounding villages.

Yesterday, the water level of the Ngawun River in Laymyethna reached seven feet seven inches, whereas eight feet one inch in Yekyi, nine feet three inches in Ngathaingchaung, six feet seven inches in Kyonpyaw and six feet four inches in Kyaunggon townships.

In towns, villages and wards where floodwaters have receded, local Tatmadaw members, Myanmar Police Force members, firefighters, social welfare and charity organizations, together with locals, are clearing mud and debris from monasteries, schools, hospitals, clinics, roads and bridges. They are also delivering food to flood victims at relief camps, providing timely emergency medical care, and continuing rehabilitation and recovery efforts.
