Flood Danger Shuts 14 Bago Schools

THE Bago River water level has exceeded the danger mark by about 1.5 feet in Bago, overflowing onto some main roads, and 14 basic education schools have had to be temporarily closed.

This was according to measurements taken by the Department of Mete­orology and Hydrology at 6:30 am on 3 September. Within the next day, it may drop by about six inches, remaining above the dan­ger mark.

Due to continuous rainfall and rising river levels, water is overflowing across some main roads in Bago as well as parts of the Yangon-Mandalay highway.

Because floodwaters entered four feet deep across compounds, 14 schools, including BEHS 4, BEHS 10, middle school branches, and primary schools, have had to be temporarily closed starting from 2 September. There are 3,838 students and 149 teachers in these schools.

“Once the water re­cedes, we will make up for the closed days by conduct­ing classes on Sundays so that the students’ educa­tion is not affected,” said an official.

The DMH has an­nounced that scattered to widespread thundershow­ers are likely to occur in Bago between 6 and 9 September. Additionally, water was overflowing by about two feet and three inches from the spillway of the Ngamoeyeik Dam in Hlegu on 3 September, rising about one inch high­er than yesterday. — TWA/ ZN
