Severe Tropical Storm Surigae likely to near Izu islands

Severe Tropical Storm Surigae could come close to the Izu Islands, south of central Tokyo, on Thursday. Officials urge the public to stay updated due to uncertainty over what path the storm may take.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, as of 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Surigae was over the waters south of Japan and moving east-northeast at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour.

It has a central pressure of 985 hectopascals, with maximum sustained winds of 108 kilometers per hour and peak instantaneous gusts of 162 kilometers per hour.

Forecasters expect the storm to track northeast and warn that it could come close to the Izu Islands on Thursday.

Waves are expected to gradually rise with swells from Wednesday onward in the Izu Islands. Furthermore, an influx of moist air from the storm could feed a rain front extending along main island Honshu's southern coast.
