MORE than 1,000 monks, nuns, locals and students visited the historic exhibits marking the 70th anniversary of the successful conclusion of the Sixth Buddhist Council at the Maha Pasana Cave on Thiri Mingala Kaba Aye Hill, Mayangon Township, Yangon yesterday morning.
The visitors included 300 students from Basic Education High School No 5 in Mayangon Township and more than 700 residents.
They explored the history of the Maha Pasana Cave, where the Sixth Buddhist Council was held, and 10 exhibits highlighting important historical and religious heritage of Buddhism.
The displays included the conception, birth and enlightenment of the Buddha; His first sermon, the Dhammacakka Pavattana Sutta, to the Five Ascetics; and His attainment of Parinibbana. Officials explained the meaning of Buddhist councils and featured exhibits on the First, Second and Third Buddhist Councils held in India, the Fourth Buddhist Council in Sri Lanka, where Buddhist scriptures were inscribed on palm leaves, and the Fifth Buddhist Council held in Mandalay under the reign of King Mindon, where the scriptures were inscribed on marble slabs. The Kuthodaw Pagodas were also featured.
The visit aimed to help younger generations gain a deeper understanding of the history and cultural heritage of Buddhism and strengthen their respect and devotion to the Sasana. — Aung Myint (IPRD)/KZL
