Kanbalu, 20 August

Farmers in Kanbalu Township, Sagaing Region, have surpassed their pigeon pea cultivation target for the current rainy season, according to the Township Agriculture Department.

This year, planting began in May and June, with an initial target of 115,660 acres. As of now, a total of 123,366 acres have been successfully cultivated—exceeding expectations.

Sagaing Region holds the largest pulse cultivation area in the country. Alongside pigeon peas, farmers also grow a variety of pulses as cash crops. In total, 17 types of peas are grown in the area, including chickpeas, green gram, and yellow green gram.

For this year’s rainy season, Kantbalu Township has planted 6,650 acres of green gram (pre-rain), 88,724 acres of green gram (rain-fed), 777 acres of butter beans, 2,225 acres of cluster bean, 123,366 acres of pigeon pea, and 9 acres of other peas.

The main crops grown in the township include paddy, pulses, oilseeds, industrial crops, perennial crops, and horticultural varieties. The Township Agriculture Department continues to work closely with local farmers to meet seasonal planting targets.— Aung Win Nyein (Kanbalu)
