Gold futures in NY top $5,000 amid geopolitical tensions

New York gold futures topped 5,000 dollars an ounce to set an all-time high on Monday. Demand for the safe-haven asset is surging amid rising geopolitical risk.

Investors are concerned US President Donald Trump's comments on acquiring Greenland will continue to create friction with Europe. US tensions with Iran are another uncertainty.

Rising risk factors have driven demand in recent months, with gold futures breaching the 4,000-dollar mark last October.

Silver futures have also climbed rapidly. They topped 100 dollars an ounce for the first time last week.
