Barcode and QR code scanning system available across over 1,800 fuel stations
MORE than 1,800 fuel stations across the country are now using barcode and QR code scanning for fuel sales, with the remaining outlets to be progressively integrated depending on internet connectivity, Director U Than Htwe of the Supervisory Committee on the Import, Storage and Distribution of Fuel Oil said.
The system was first introduced on 12 March, 2026, in Yangon, Mandalay Nay Pyi Taw, and Taunggyi townships to make fuel more accessible to the public and reduce vehicle queuing. The rollout was later expanded to Bago Region and stations along the Yangon-Mandalay Road on 28 March 2026, Ayeyawady and Magway regions on 4 April 2026, Mon State on 22 April 2026, Kayin State and Taninthayi Region on 23 April 2026, and Sagaing Region (Monywa, Sagaing, Shwebo) on 16 May 2026, he added.
Out of a total of 2,648 fuel stations nationwide, 1,837 stations are now equipped with the scanning system, accounting for approximately 70 per cent.
Authori t ies are monitoring compliance and have warned that stations failing to follow the scanning requirements will face legal action, according to the committee. — ASH/KK
