Eight Schools Temporarily Closed as Irrawaddy River Rises in Nyaung U

Eight basic education schools in Nyaung U Township, Mandalay Region, have been temporarily closed due to rising water levels in the Irrawaddy River, according to U Kyaw Win, district education officer.

The river has reached 2,202 centimeters, exceeding the danger level of 2,120 centimeters by 82 centimeters (2 feet 8.3 inches).

The schools were temporarily closed between August 10 and 12 as water levels rose. A total of 1,426 students will receive additional classes after the river recedes to make up for lost school days, officials said.—Depalin
