Elephant camps across regions/states mark World Elephant Day

A special buffet of food for elephants was held at 20 elephant camps across various regions and states yesterday to mark World Elephant Day. The elephants were provided with a variety of food, including pineapples, watermelons, bananas, cucumbers, pumpkins, mangoes, sugarcane, elephant grass, bamboo leaves and corn.

World Elephant Day has been observed annually on 12 August since 2012 to raise awareness of the need to protect and preserve elephants worldwide.

The events were organized by camp officials, and mahouts. Celebrations were also held at Ngalaik Elephant Camp in Ottarathiri Township, Nay Pyi Taw Council Area, and Wingabaw Elephant Camp in Phayagyi, Bago Region.

Visitors also took part in activities such as playing football and bathing with the elephants, while some elephants were released into the forest for pasture. — Diparlin/ MKKS
